Paperless Future: BenchPrep is Taking Textbooks and Study Groups Online

New technology applications are emerging in social networks that may one day put an end to the tree killing paper used in school texts and paper notebooks. Students already have access to digital networks that assist with their academics in addition to their social lives. About 150,000 people are taking advantage of the services of a company called BenchPrep. In addition to digitizing test prep materials, they are also giving students online access to study aids and virtual study groups.

BenchPrep is a Chicago-based startup that is backed by Lightbank, a company that was founded by the discount buying site Groupon). Lightbank provides seed funding to startups located in the Chicago area. They plan to give out $10 million every year for the next decade.

BenchPrep gives students the ability to ask questions of other people studying similar material. BenchPrep includes the ability to add notes or even append YouTube videos to various parts of the texts and share your additions with other learners.

“We take the flat content and enhance it by adding interaction and social conversations,” cofounder Ashish Rangenkar told Fast Company.

BenchPrep is also preparing leaderboards for practice tests by including interactive quizzes. The materials BenchPrep provides comes from established content providers like McGraw Hill and Wiley.

So far, BenchPrep offers 17 courses in test preparation. Users buy the individual courses and then access them via the company’s website or through a free app they can download to their smartphones or iPad.

About 100 more courses are in the pipeline, including some for professional certification and some for high school Advanced Placement classes. Eventually the company wants to provide as many as 10,000 courses.

“We want to capture the whole education lifecycle,” Rangenkar says. Things like test prep, study aids, and virtual groups, can benefit students from high school to graduate school, even professional training courses are well suited to this application.

The suite of tools offered by BenchPrep demonstrate that a paperless world is also a better world for learners.

Building a Sustainability Strategy Online Course

This interactive webinar course on sustainability is composed of four modules. It is 1.5 hours per week for 4 weeks (October 4, October 11, October 18 and October 25). The course starts at 1:00 pm EST and ends at 2:30 pm EST.

Course Description

An organization's sustainability strategy can have a significant impact upon its reputation with customers, employees and within the supply chain. False starts and poorly integrated efforts are costly, hurt the creditability of the initiative, the implementation team and the company.

This workshop will provide you with experienced advice, proven frameworks, best practices and tools to simplify the sustainability process. You will also have the opportunity to work on your own sustainability planning process and receive coaching during the workshop. Our sustainability workshops are also a great place to build sustainability networks and communities of practice.

Learning Objectives
Using examples, case studies, best practices, hands-on activities and participation through the on-line Community of Practice and "Peer to Peer" dialogue, you will:

• List the steps in developing a sustainability strategy and begin to customize them for your organization.
• Develop a business case for sustainability including drivers, opportunities, risks, issues and challenges.
• Develop a process for a definition, vision and goals for sustainability for your organization.
• Create a plan to assess the impact of sustainability on our organization's economic, environmental and social performance.
• Identify methods for determining sustainability metrics.
• Discuss methods for prioritizing and implementation of sustainability initiatives.
• Understand best practices for integrating sustainability into corporate governance, operations and the culture of the organization.
• Establish a draft plan for tracking progress toward targets; and reporting achievements and progress towards sustainability goals.

Module 1 (October 4, 2011): Understanding Sustainability

In this module participants will:

Understand current definitions of sustainability, corporate social responsibility and related concepts and choose a definition for their company.

Compare and contrast different frameworks for sustainability such as The Natural Step, Triple Bottom Line, ISO 26000 & Corporate Social Responsibility and general practices and protocols such as ISO 14001, Global Reporting Initiative. Choose a framework for their company.
Examine the importance of current worldviews, and the essential nature of systems, futures and critical thinking in sustainability program design and implementation. Discuss the 10 steps and organizational structure for sustainability plan development and implementation.

Module 2 (October 11, 2011): Making the Business Case & Creating a Shared Vision

In this module participants will:

Examine the drivers for sustainability.
Outline and share the business case for their company.
Compare different methods for gaining consensus on a shared vision for sustainability. Develop and share their plan for gaining consensus on a shared vision.

Module 3 (October 18, 2011): Conducting the Gap Assessment & Establishing Sustainability Metrics

Examine methods for assessing their company's current sustainability position (such as assessment checklists, force field analysis, 5 forces, weighted matrix, process mapping etc).

Video: Introduction to 24 Hours of Reality

Between September 14th and 15th, the event 24 Hours of Reality saw people around the globe calling attention to the climate crisis and working to solve it. By the time former Vice President Al Gore finished his presentation on the evening of September 15th, the 24 hour long event had 8.6 million views.

There are countless stories of impressive grassroots mobilization for the event. A company in Tel Aviv hosted a watch party at their headquarters. A group of graduate students in Athens, Georgia rented out a popular local movie theater. People across the world joined hands to say: Climate change is real, it’s happening now and the time to act is now.

But this is just the beginning. There are important actions you can take today:

24 Hours of Reality

This event is a 24-hour worldwide marathon all about the reality of the climate crisis. 24 Hours of Reality will be broadcast live online, over 24 hours, representing 24 time zones and 13 languages. 3. Walden University's Masters in Management has the option of a specialization in Sustainable Management which emphasizes the development of management skills that can be applied to business strategies relating to environmental and community awareness. This online program is a thirty six credit hour commitment that can be completed in eighteen months to two years. Two of the interesting course additions to this curriculum that are not always found in environmental management degree programs are in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, and in Initiating and Managing Change. Also included as an elective is Social and Environmental Responsibility in Entrepreneurship.

In Walden University's M.S. in Management program with a specialization in Sustainable Management, students have the opportunity to receive a broad management education with a focus on the social and environmental responsibility of organizations. Program coursework covers business obligations relating to the community and environment, global awareness, and starting a business that addresses economic and social issues. Students also have the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and team building.

4. Ashford University offers an MBA with a specialization in Environmental Management. This degree integrates sustainable business strategies into your education. Environmental Management specialization students learn to meet the challenges of energy, economics, and the environment.

The Environmental Management specialization gives you the strategic planning tools to respond to the next-generation economy. You will study economic forces, business risk, and alternative sources of energy.

This is an online degree that calls for the usual curriculum found in most business schools, supplemented with courses on alternative sources of energy and the economic impact of sustainability. Students are expected to emerge having learned how to use the tools necessary to compete in the next-generation economy.

5. Kaplan University Masters in International Environmental Policy. This Masters of Arts degree provides the next generation of environmental policy professionals with the skills to solve the world's most pressing environmental problems. Their curriculum is informed by top leaders in the environmental field from government, business, and non-governmental organizations. They focus exclusively on master's-level education that produces the best international environmental policy professionals in the world.

Their curriculum is solution oriented. They train students to be the solution - to craft effective, efficient, and just strategies to tackle the world’s toughest environmental challenges. Their courses blend theoretical and practical applications to prepare students for the job market.

Harvard Corporate Sustainability Distance Learning Course

Harvard University is offering an open enrollment, distance learning course on sustainability. The fall 2011 course is focused on Corporate Sustainability.

This course explores sustainability from a corporate perspective with a focus on the global marketplace. The course covers all three responsibilities of sustainability: environmental stewardship, social well-being, and economic prosperity.

The course uses the case method approach to help students learn to communicate effectively with non-governmental organizations, government agencies, other companies, and the media. Through the cases, students come to appreciate the issues of sustainability at the corporate level.

The cost of the course is as follows: Noncredit, undergraduate credit $1,025, graduate credit $1,950.

E-Learning Course on the Legal Frameworks of Sustainability

A new online course is being offered for those who want to deepen their expertise by knowing more about the legal frameworks surrounding sustainability. The course is being offered from October 10 to November 4, 2011. The four week e-learning course titled "Legal Preparedness for the Green Economy," costs 350 euros or 505 USD.

The overall objective of this e-learning course is to enable self-paced training which aims to enhance the capacity of legal experts, and those in the public and private sector.

The course is not only intended for lawyers, it is also intended for environment specialists from the public and private sector and those involved with climate change, natural resources, energy and finance. The course is also well suited to those who do development work and officials from National Authorities, OECD, FAO, UNCBD and UNFCCC.

People who could benefit from this course include those involved with energy, natural resources, agriculture, social responsibility and other officers and managers of institutions and businesses. In effect, all of those who are overseeing the legal framework for the transition from the current “brown economy” to the Green Economy.

The course helps participants to recommend actions on how to strengthen sustainable development law, policy and practice to facilitate the emergence of a Green Economy (regulations, management system and procedures) in their countries.

Candidates should have a University degree and be working in the field of supervision of climate-related projects execution and have practical experience in that field.

Participants will acquire substantive knowledge and practical skills in a structured online learning sequence through case studies, role plays (whenever possible), online simulated exercises and sharing in-country best practices.

ENGR 0036 Fundamentals of Green Building Design and Construction
The purpose of this course is to give the student an overview of design and construction delivery systems for high performance green buildings. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) will be reviewed in some detail along with sustainability evaluation systems, the vocabulary associated with green buildings, and an understanding of the physical limitations of the materials studied.

ENGR 0040 Green Building Commissioning
This course studies techniques to achieve the goals of green building standards during and beyond the construction of the building. It reviews the make-up of smart buildings and the incorporation of commissioning throughout the building lifecycle. Students will learn to identify and understand the objectives of integrated systems into building automation and the use of commissioning to verify the system performance. Focus is placed on understanding the interrelationship between the systems and monitoring for peak performance. Please note: This course replaces the Building Information Modeling (BIM) course that is no longer offered.

GE 0001 Introduction to Renewable Energy
This course will provide a top-level overview of the history, policy, jobs and economic issues driving the emerging renewable energy field. GE 0008 Energy Efficiency, Evaluation and Design
This course presents the key concepts and methods of energy efficiency. It explores how energy is converted into useful services and the role of increased efficiency in providing those services with less energy. The different forms of efficiency improvements and conservation are introduced, drawing upon examples in transportation, buildings, and industry. The practical implications of public policies, behavior, and economics are interspersed with technical and theoretical aspects. Key concepts include how to convert and design efficient solar energy designs.

SP 0001 Overview of Sustainability
This course provides an overview of sustainability and its history as it relates to the built environment from the economic, environmental, and social-equity development perspectives. Learn how researchers and analysts define sustainability, as well as how they measure and track progress. Gain knowledge of the three areas of importance: commercial and business, community leaders, and society. Study the triple bottom line, best practices, review policies, laws, codes, and standards. Understand AB 32 and its impact. A project which can be applied to the work environment will be developed. Learn about new trends and what kinds of green jobs are being developed.

The Sustainability Education Series from Green Education Online

The Sustainability Education Series from Green Education Online is comprised of a suite of 50 online, training modules. Each of the thirteen training topics is delivered in 15-minute modules. Each training module includes practical, hands-on applications while providing information and directions for facilitating and developing key sustainability initiatives.

These training modules are designed for companies and governments which seek to educate employees with a high-quality curriculum that can be inserted into any LMS. Green Education Online offers training on topics covering sustainability strategies and programs, innovation, and best practices.

The sustainability modules are designed for managers and Supervisors who will be involved in the implementation process of an organizations’ quest for becoming more energy efficient and in planning sustainability and energy saving programs. SUSTAINABILITY PLANNING
This training provides detailed guidelines to address how to develop and then implement a Sustainability Plan. Covers the fundamentals of building science and examines a 'whole-building' approach to construction, operations and maintenance. This provides a healthier environment while also making the building more energy efficient. The modules identifies core principles, best practices, regulations and incentives; and fundamentals of green building rating systems. Training participants will learn how to develop a basic action plan for implementing “green” building systems in renovation plans or in building new structures.

GREEN CERTIFICATIONS, LABELS, AND STANDARDS
The growing green certification, labels, and standards can be confusing and overwhelming. A green certification is supposed to be an indication that green principles are practiced and that dynamic, ongoing sustainability practices are in place. Industry certifications in building, consumer products, environmental landscaping, fleet management, lodging/tourism are just some of the areas that will be covered.

GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
This overview of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) identifies and covers life cycle analysis. In the government and business sectors, GSCM is critical in procurement programs, award of contracts, and as part of the overall Sustainability Planning process. The purpose of this training is to describe the impact of green to the supply chain management, demonstrating how green practices can save money, increase efficiency, and reduce delivery time.
